ABOUT THIS COMMITTEE
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was established in 1945 as one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, tasked with maintaining international peace and security. The UNSC is responsible for addressing threats to global stability, including conflicts, terrorism, and violations of international law. It has the authority to take a variety of actions, such as imposing sanctions, authorizing military intervention, and establishing peacekeeping missions. The council consists of 15 members, including five permanent members with veto power—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and ten elected non-permanent members. The UNSC plays a critical role in resolving disputes and preventing the escalation of conflicts, working to ensure a peaceful and secure world for all nations. Its decisions are central to the UN’s efforts in conflict prevention, mediation, and post-conflict recovery.
