ABOUT THIS COMMITTEE

The U.S. Senate is one of the two chambers of Congress, consisting of 100 senators, with each state represented by two members serving six-year terms. It has key responsibilities such as passing laws, confirming presidential appointments, ratifying treaties, and conducting impeachment trials. Often seen as the more deliberative chamber, the Senate’s rules encourage extended debate and compromise.
