GA-3: Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee
The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), also known as the United Nations General Assembly Third Committee, carries out studies on the protection of human rights, empowerment of women, elimination of racial discrimination, right to self-determination, treatment of refugees and indigenous people. As the Third Committee, SOCHUM performs cooperative work with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). SOCHUM also focuses its studies on the protection of children, crime prevention, persons with disabilities and international drug control. Additionally, SOCHUM aims to promote international development on humanitarian affairs while improving collaboration between all Member States.
During KALMUN 2019, the delegates of the Third Committee will have the opportunity to seek solutions to the issues regarding the exploitation of refugees by violent non-state actors, women’s access to healthcare with a special emphasis on MENA region and the freedom of media and the rights of journalists while eliminating state-sponsored censorship.
